* Distracted out of her turbulent thoughts, she shielded her eyes against the bright sun hanging in a deep blue, cloudless sky and glanced at the man standing near her. “Yes?”
* “May I get you anything?” A slight British accent colored his voice.
* A cloak of patience emanated from the black-haired, hazel-eyed, gorgeous specimen of a man waiting on her answer. Cassie wanted to roll around in his calmness like a feline in a pile of catnip. She swept her gaze up and down his tall, athletic frame, landing on his gold and black name tag.
* Damian.
* Snippets from the movie “The Omen” flipped through her mind. Evil kid. But his name was Damien, with an E not an A, wasn’t it? She smiled at the worker. Damian or Damien, either way, the young fellow looked like he could be trouble. All sorts of fun trouble.

* She assumed the position without question. Ethan placed the rock on her hands to weigh them down. The rough mass, long and wide enough to cover both hands and most of her fingers, pressed upon and nipped her palms. Slowly, the compression and pricks to her muscles and tendons turned into an aching burn. Letting the mild pain float through her, she tested her mobility. She couldn’t move her arms. “Innovative.”
* “I’m good that way.” Ethan straddled her thighs, pinning her lower half to the blanket. “Have to think quick on my feet during my cases.” He bent down and kissed her chin, trailed hot kisses down her throat and nuzzled his face in the crook of her neck. * “Stay right there.” He glanced around the area, stepped away and picked up a good sized rock.
* What the hell does he plan to do with that? Images of him bashing her head in flitted through her mind. After all, she didn’t really know the guy. Maybe he was some kind of psycho, and she’d been charmed into his trap. A momentary bout of panic ran through her.
* He cocked his head and peered at her with a baffled expression. “You’re not afraid, are you? Cat, darling, trust me. I won’t harm you.”
* Rooted to her spot, she determined whether or not she should give him credence, decided she could and managed a nod.
* “Good.” His sinfully accented voice rumbled. “Now, lay down on the blanket on your back. Put your arms above your head, palms facing the sky.”

The large building had a stone façade that reminded her of the Italian marble found in her grandmother’s New York City penthouse. She liked the big pieces of cream colored stones with gold and grey veins streaking their surfaces. Rachel shifted uneasily in her seat. She couldn’t put a finger on it, but something about the structure was off. The lodge seemed too large, appeared too new.

....* Shocked at the eerily familiar vista of the ranch before her, Rachel Star slammed on the brakes of her economy rental car. The vehicle skidded then fishtailed. Rocks shot out from under the tires, pinging the undercarriage and flying off into the scraggy brush growing alongside the stone covered drive. A grayish brown dust cloud enveloped the automobile as she came to stop in the middle of the road. Shaking from the fleeting but chilling sensation of déjà vu, she turned on the heat and waited for the view to clear.
....* Fine, gritty earth particles created an ugly sandy coat on the green car. She didn’t care. The rental could be washed, but the image etched into her mind? What could be done about that? Still disbelieving the sight before her, she clicked on the windshield wash and wipers. The brush of the black metal and rubber arms along the glass didn’t change the vision. Another cold rush of vague feelings that she’d been here before swept over her.
....* The Double D. She’d never stepped foot on the property, yet, if she had to bet her life on it, she’d have sworn she’d been on the southern Nevada ranch once upon a time. All she had ever seen of the Dougans’ place was from the few photos her sister, Marianne, had sent her, but the in-person familiarity was uncanny. Somehow she seemed to know the nuances of the land, the placement the buildings, and their purpose. Property lines. A small pond up and over the ridge.

Here, Dakota is down at the bonfire thinking about the ranch, his family and the women who've come to visit.
